A FORMER secondary school sixth form building in Tregaron will be sold after Ceredigion council’s charity trust committee agreed to accept an offer in the region of £160,000.

It had been agreed in November 2019 that the former school site – which was decommissioned in 2014 – be marketed for sale through the authority’s estates section.

The collection of buildings in the town, used in the past as a library and sixth form school before the revamp and reopening of Ysgol Henry Richard, were put on the market for offers around £160,000. The amount offered for the school was included in an exempt report which the committee discussed in a closed session at its meeting on Thursday 8, July.

A sub-group including Cllrs Elizabeth Evans, Keith Evans and Ivor Williams, as well as council officers, met last month to discuss the offer, which is an unconditional offer, and recommended it be accepted.

Concerns had been raised by nearby residents and local councillors about overgrown areas of the site and the deteriorating condition of the building which were “drivers in going out to sale”.

Cllr Elizabeth Evans added on Thursday that with the planned National Eisteddfod for the town delayed due to the pandemic, the building “would be a sorry sight in Tregaron” when it welcomes visitors next year.

The committee voted to accept the offer and that officers, on the charity trust’s behalf, agree and complete all necessary documentation and ancillary matters in relation to the sale.

It was also agreed that a charity trust committee sub-group will be set up to consider recommendations in relation to how any capital and income held by the charity should be utilised to fulfil the charity’s objectives, which will be reported back to committee for decision.
