MP GLYN Davies has called the new proposed Westminster constituency boundaries - which would see Llanidloes become part of Ceredigion and Machynlleth included in a Clwyd South seat - “heart-breaking” and a “total demolition” of Montgomeryshire.
The Boundary Commission’s outline proposals, set to be introduced at the 2020 general election would abolish the Montgomeryshire seat while reducing the number of Welsh MPs from 40 to 29.
Mr Davies said that Montgomeryshire is being “torn into three pieces to ‘top up’ other constituencies.”
Machynlleth ward would be in the Clwyd South and North Montgomeryshire seat under the new set-up, while Llanidloes would form part of the new Ceredigion and North Pembrokeshire constituency.
“Parliamentary democracy in the old County of Montgomeryshire will be much diminished,” Mr Davies said.
“MPs will become as little known in future as MEPs are little known now.
“This boundaries review may well be ‘fair’ in a statistical sense, but it’s heart-breaking for me.
“The only consolation is that the Welsh Parliament constituency will remain Montgomeryshire.
“This will be confusing at first, but less so as familiarity with MPs decreases.
“These new constituencies will resonate with very few in Montgomeryshire."
