CEREDIGION MP Mark Williams has said the experience of visiting ‘The Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais will “stay with me for a very long time”.

Mr Williams was part of a delegation organised by the Caritas Social Action Network which visited the encampment known as The Jungle in the north French port town of Calais, which is now thought to be home to 3,000 refugees and migrants.

On his return to the UK, Mr Williams, who said he went along after the support shown by his constituents, described the “desperate situation” he witnessed, likening the camp to the “slums” he came across in Nairobi last year.

He said: “Ceredigion residents have been incredibly generous in their support for charity initiatives for the camp and so it was appropriate to go and see the situation myself.

“I wanted to see first-hand the desperate situation in the camp.

“It is one thing to see the conditions on television, but it is quite another to visit and experience them first-hand.
