ENVIRONMENTAL chiefs are assuring anglers of the River Teifi that they are continuing to do all they can to achieve a successful enforcement action following last December’s slurry leak which killed well over 1,000 salmon and brown trout.
The spillage – covering an eight-mile stretch of the waterway - is suspected of having started at a farm near Tregaron.
Natural Resources Wales, who meet the Teifi Local Fisheries Group at Lampeter next month, this week sought to address claims of an apparent lack of progress while also trying to dispel fears of further such incidents.
“We can understand the frustration of the angling community,” Ben Wilson, NRW’s operations manager for Ceredigion, told the Cambrian News.
“The investigation into this pollution leak remains a priority for me, the NRW and our team locally. It’s a far more complex case than it seemed at first.
“We have to be very careful about what we say in public as we do not want to say anything that may affect the eventual outcome.
“The emphasis remains on trying to ensure we conduct this investigation as properly as we can so we achieve a successful conclusion.
“I have tried to keep local angling clubs in the loop as to what’s going on and will be speaking to them at the next meeting of the Teifi Local Fisheries Group on 15 November.”
