A POPULAR community asset has been closed following “mindless and wilful vandalism”.
Cyngor Tref Ffestiniong Town Council was forced to temporarily close down the skatepark in Blaenau Ffestiniog last week after bins were toppled over and rocks thrown launched at skate ramps.
The damage is believed to have taken place around the first weekend of the month (6-10 October) and a representative of North Wales Police was informed of the damage at a town council meeting last week.
Skaters and other park users have been warned to stay away as there is the risk of injury to anyone who enters the recreation ground.
Erwyn Jones, chair of Ffestiniog Town Council, was saddened by the need to close the park.
“The town council was very disappointed to learn of this mindless and wilfull vandalism to community equipment at the popular skatepark,” he told the Cambrian News.
“As a result, we had no choice but to shut the skate park temporarily, to avoid the possibility of users being injured.
“We stress this is only a temporary closure, and endeavour to have it re-opened as soon as possible.
“From what I gather, the damage was done by person/persons throwing stones to the ramp structure, which has resulted in a rough and sharp hole being punched in to the steel structure.
“If anyone has any information regarding the vandalism, please call the town clerk, or Police anonymously.
“We thank the community for their understanding and co-operation in this matter.”
