A POPULAR Aberystwyth town councillor and former mayor has been thanked for her service to the town after announcing she is moving to Australia for a year.

Cllr Wendy Morris, who represents Aberystwyth Rheidol ward, was mayor in 2013-2014, and worked at the Cambrian News, said the move will mean she will not stand again in the town council elections in May.

Named a ‘Real Welsh Legend’ by Brains brewery in 2015 after a public vote, Cllr Morris was thanked for her service by fellow councillors last week.

The current mayor Cllr Brendan Somers said: “I would like to thank you for the work you have done which has been considerable.”

Cllr Morris told the Cambrian News after the meeting: “It has been a true pleasure and privilege to have represented the town of Aberystwyth as a councillor.

“I hope that within those years I have made a difference and an impact as a councillor.

“Being the mayor of the town in 2013-14 was an amazing experience and I truly loved the role.

“It’s been a challenge at times on the council, but also some of the best times, and those have been shared with my fellow councillors.

“I am sad not to be standing for re-election this year, but you can be assured I will be flying the Aberystwyth flag on my travels around Australia.”
