PORTHMADOG and Aberystwyth have both been named on a travel guidebook publisher’s list of Britain’s 30 Best Seaside Towns.

Rough Guides describes Porthmadog as "handsome", owing "at least a portion of its good looks to the magnificent views all around".

The Gwynedd town is seen as the ideal base for trips into Snowdonia National Park and highlights the close proximity of the 22km-long Ffestiniog Railway.

There’s also praise for nearby Borth-y-Gest, an "utterly charming" semi-circle of brightly painted Victorian houses lining the beach.

Aberystwyth "has all the hallmarks of a traditional British seaside resort", according to Rough Guides.

But the publisher is quick to note the "lively student population, plentiful pubs, booming café culture and a strong sense of national pride".
