A PORTHMADOG teenager has been recognised as the fittest man in Wales.

Tomos Harri Smith, 19, has been wowing judges across the world with his CrossFit prowess.

Tomos was introduced to CrossFit – a high-intensity fitness programme incorporating elements from several sports and types of exercise – by his brother five years ago and has not looked back since.

In 2013, at 15 years old, he entered The CrossFit Games, which is a worldwide competition entered by the fittest in the world. He entered in the Teens category and made it to the finals in America, where he was placed second fittest teen in the world!

A year later, he entered two Teen CrossFit competitions in Manchester, and won both.

His talent did not go unnoticed, as in 2016 he was personally invited to train with the fittest teens in the world by world class coaches in Majorca and Tenerife.

In February this year he entered the CrossFit Open worldwide competition again, at the tender age of 18, in the men’s division, competing against the fittest men on earth, and was recognised as the fittest man in Wales, despite his youthful age.

In January 2018, he will be competing against the fittest men on the continent at the CrossFit European Championship in Colchester.

Tomos, who is now a CrossFit coach, remains as determined as ever.

“I train five days a week with the gym members. We all help each other to improve and it’s a great feeling at the end of a competition to see the hard work pay off,” he said.

“I hope through commitment and hard work that I will reach the pinnacle of the sport. I work full time but I usually train up to four hours a day.

“I work on strength, speed, endurance and gymnastic abilities in a structured and intense workout structure

“I’m pretty well rounded at every aspect of it, I wouldn’t say I have a favourite skill, it’s important to train all skills in order to be the best.”

When asked about his proudest achievement to date, the 19-year-old did not hesitate.

“My greatest achievement would be the latest one, to be recognised as the fittest man in Wales,” he said.

“That came as a shock as I’m still young and still growing.

“I still have a lot to achieve.”
