MEMBERS met for their monthly meeting in Y Ganolfan on Monday, 4 April. President Eifiona Williams welcomed them and was pleased to report that Megan Carson was recovering well after her operation. In the short business meeting, plans were discussed for future IT courses, a day course at Plas Tan y Bwlch on Catrin O Ferain and Mildred Eldridge as well as a summer trip. Then Anwen Jones, from the Gwynedd Archive Service gave us an insight into her work. She began by outlining the different material held in the archives and which give insight into the history of the region. These include records of hearth taxes paid as well as estate, industrial and maritime records. Gwynedd Archives hold the oldest set of records from the quarter sessions in Britain going back to the time of Henry VIII. The talk ended with a series of pictures of old Porthmadog, including photos of schoolchildren, football teams and the local band. It was a fascinating glimpse into the past and brought to life by Anwen’s explanations of what the different material showed. Margaret Bromley gave the vote of thanks, explaining that while she had not been interested in history at school, the evening had been a revelation. The evening ended, as usual, with tea and cakes provided by the hostesses, Elizabeth Mountford and Patricia Trevor Owen.
