The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

AFTER an absence of nearly three years, Mormon missionaries have returned to serve with the local branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With occasional exceptions, the missionaries are generally rotated from area to area every six weeks. However, demand in other areas resulted in the complete withdrawal of missionaries from Porthmadog, and it is only now that any are available to take up service again. But this time there’s a difference.

People are quite used to seeing smart young men wearing the missionary name-badges.Now, however, two female missionaries have arrived to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Sister Ridgway, 27, comes from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She gained a degree in sacred literature after studying in Calgary.Following that, she experienced a number of influences, including two sister missionaries of the church, which led her to join the church. Her companion has a totally different background. Sister Leiter, who comes from Parish, near Syracuse in New York state, USA, is 25; she is the fifth of 10 children, who are all members of the church. Her father served in submarines in the US Navy, then moved to civil nuclear engineering. Her mother had her hands full not only as a homemaker, but also teaching all her children at home. Partly inspired by her father’s military service, at the age of 18 she entered the US Army and served in intelligence, reaching the rank of sergeant. She had already achieved an associate of arts degree with a concentration on criminal justice and went on to obtain an associate degree in Arabic and a bachelor’s degree in investigative forensics as well.Sister Leiter sums up her life and her mission in just three words: “Service is paramount.”Upcoming services: Sunday, Y Ganolfan, High Street: 10am, Main Service with bilingual communion; 11.20am, Gospel Study (Sunday School for all ages).
