This property dating back to the 1600s was the first ever Laura Ashley store - and now it is for sale.
35-37 Heol Maengwyn, in Machynlleth, is currently known as the Deco Shop, but in 1961 was the first shop ever to be opened by fashion designer Laura Ashley, as commemorated on a tablet at the front of the property.

The property, which is used for retail on the ground floor and accommodation upstairs, was built in the late 17th century and is Grade II listed, with period features such as oak staircases, exposed beam work and timber panelled partitions.
Laura Ashley itself was established in 1953, when Laura Ashley and her husband Bernard Ashley began to sell headscarves and similar products via retailers such as John Lewis.

The company nearly collapsed in 1958, when flooding from the River Darent destroyed much of the stock and equipment.
Subsequently, Laura and Bernard decided to move to Wales, and bought what is now the Deco Shop, living in the rooms above the shop for six years.
The primary area of the building is the shop, which has two entrances and a deep display window, as well as a rear store area and a former WC. Outside, there is also a small courtyard area.

Upstairs, the first floor contains two rooms, one of which is used as a staff room, a WC and a shower, while the second floor has two further rooms, one featuring a skylight.
The property has been brought to market by Morris Marshall & Poole (MMP), who have listed the building at a guide price of £230,000.

Paul Evans of MMP commented: “This is an exceptional opportunity for the right buyer, having the opportunity to purchase a period property with an interesting history.
“It is a commercial premises, currently known as the Deco Shop, selling quality artist materials and associated items and a base for their interior design business.
“Contained over three floors, it offers fantastic potential in its excellent trading position.”
