Nearly £9,000 has been raised for a Teifi Valley canoe club who were hardest hit by the weekend’s floods caused by Storm Callum.

A GoFundMe appeal set up for Llandysul Paddlers has raised over £14,000 after water rushed into their base on the banks of the Teifi on Saturday.

A Facebook post revealed the clubhouse, bunkhouse, shop and new building under construction had suffered extensive damage while trailers, sheds, racks, boats and other essential kit were swept down-river.

“The full extent of the damage is yet to be known, but this vital community organisation will now need funds to get back in its feet as soon as possible,” the statement continued.

Although the town’s park flooded, volunteers put sandbags around the sport pavilion and stopped the water getting in.

The Pwerdy Powerhouse Community and Arts Centre was submerged to the height of its eaves and lost windows.

“The water came through via the balcony and front door as the road became part of the river,” said eyewitness Lesley Parker.

“They lost most of their art equipment, a computer, and photocopier. Over the road the houses are higher but the river was running down the road and they were trapped for a while.

"Someone told me that about three inches of water came into their house. O J Williams, the oil and gas depot, was flooded as was the fruit wholesaler, George and Davies. All the drivers were out delivering so they all lost their cars.

“The Half Moon Inn and nearby houses were all evacuated. People from St Tysul’s Church came down with tea, coffee and soup and others kept coming to help clear up.”
