Three outstanding A-level students from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor have each been offered a £2,000 scholarship by Aberystwyth University for their first year of studies.
The university hopes this scholarship will ease the students’ transition from college to higher education by covering some of the costs associated with going to university.
Large numbers of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor students’ progress to Aberystwyth University every year and the bespoke scholarship that these students have been offered represents the good relationship between the two education bodies and the strong commitment to develop this further in the future.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Prof Elizabeth Treasure, said: “Our awarding panel was very impressed with the standard of candidates applying to study with us and were unable to select just one recipient.”
Llio said: “I am very grateful to the College for all the support that I have received during my time studying here and I am very pleased to receive this scholarship. I’m looking forward to the next step in my education.”
Llio, Megan and Ifan hope to go on to study Maths, History & Politics and Physical Geography (respectively) at Aberystwyth University, which is much more achievable with this scholarship.
Gareth Lanagan, the Dolgellau campus programme area manager, said: “Working together with the Universities in Wales have enriched the opportunities of the A-Level students across Dolgellau and Pwllheli. We were extremely grateful to Aberystwyth University that we were chosen for one of their bespoke grant. It is fantastic that Llio, Ifan and Megan have had their academic endeavours recognised. It should not be underestimated the impact this will have on the students at Aberystwyth.”
