ABERDYFI’S old primary school is to get a new lease of life as a day care centre and holiday let.
The Aberdyfi Enterprise Trust will use a £30,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to renovate the defunct school building into a new facility for vulnerable people in the seaside village.
The money, from the £9 million Community Asset Transfer 2 Programme, will be used to support the transfer of assets, such as land and buildings, into community ownership.
Although the project has already secured nearly £30,000, there is a possibility of receiving further donations of between £300,000 and £1,150,000 if the iniative is deemed successful.
The Aberdyfi project involves the transfer of the former Aberdyfi Primary School building and associated land from Gwynedd County Council.
The school building will be refurbished and modified to create a socialisation centre for older people with a 4 person holiday let, specifically for disabled people and two business incubator pods.
The project has been invited to develop a stage two application and a development grant of £29,005 has been awarded.
Rob Pickford, Wales Big Lottery Fund committee member and chair of the CAT2 programme committee said: “This programme is helping Welsh communities to become stronger and more sustainable by assisting them to obtain and develop assets and improve where they live.
“By helping to transfer assets to enterprising organisations that actively involve and benefit the communities they serve, we are ultimately helping more people to benefit from their local community assets and also generating local income and employment.”
