A fund set up in memory of a popular Aberystwyth man has raised over £4,000 for charity.
Meilyr Llwyd, or Mei, as he was affectionately known to everyone, died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Penparcau aged just 43.
Meilyr worked at the National Library of Wales, played for Aberystwyth Town FC’s disability football team and was described as a very popular man.
His death came as an enormous shock to his family, fellow workers, friends and many acquaintances throughout Wales.
His amiable, kind and generous personality was sorely missed, as was his jovial and mischievous character, they said.
Meilyr’s general and specialised knowledge was quite remarkable and he possessed a phenomenal memory.
Meilyr was brought up in the village of Llangwyryfon, initially at Ty’r Ysgol and later at Ynyswen, but since December 2008 he had lived in a Mencap house in Penparcau where he was exceptionally well looked after by a team of carers.
And since September 1995 he had been on the staff of the National Library of Wales where he thoroughly enjoyed his work and the company of his colleagues.
At the time of Meilyr’s death a memorial fund was opened with the aim of distributing the fund amongst charities and establishments close to Mei’s heart.
By the date of his birthday on 27 February, the fund had reached £4,250.
The total was distributed, in varying sums, to the following: National Library of Wales, Mencap Cymru, Gateway Club Aberystwyth, Aberystwyth Football Club (Disability Squad), Aberystwyth Archery Club, Aberystwyth All-in Swimming Club, Josh’s Lighthouse Project and Ysgol Llangwyryfon.
Meilyr’s close family wish to express their gratitude for all the expressions of sympathy and kindness they received at the time of their bereavement, and wish to sincerely thank everyone who contributed so generously to the memorial fund.
