The team behind plans to turn a run-down Nefyn pub into a community venture has secured a £5,000 grant from Calor Gas as part of its Rural Community Fund scheme.
Tafarn yr Heliwr (The Sportsman) has been announced as one of 21 winners of a bid to secure funding for community projects.
The venture was chosen by a panel of judges after it received more than 3,000 votes during an earlier voting stage.
The Calor Gas Rural Community Fund aims to improve the lives of communities across the country by investing in regenerating or maintaining spaces or activities for residents.
Tafarn yr Heliwr was bought by the Nefyn community through shares in November 2018, having been out of use since 2009.
It requires extensive refurbishment and maintenance to the exterior of the building before it can become ‘a welcoming community asset’ and be reopened as a space for residents to spend time with each other.
Work is already underway, with committee members and volunteers clearing the pub every weekend, but the committee says it still needs an extra boost to help turn the pub into the community haven they envision.
This money will be used to paint the frontage of the building and buy new signs, lights, hanging baskets, a bike rack and a bench.
