Machynlleth Town Council have been granted £5,400 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee later this year.

During a meeting on 31 January, Machynlleth Mayor Cllr Tony Jones said he had applied, on behalf of the council, to the National Lottery Community Fund’s Platinum Jubilee fund.

Since the meeting, Cllr Tony Jones has confirmed council have been granted £5,400 to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and Queen Elizabeth’s 70 year reign on a four day bank holiday weekend, from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June 2022.

Cllr Tony Jones said: “On Friday, people will go to church and on the Saturday I think there will be street parties. So we thought of doing it on the Sunday. I may not be mayor or councillor at the time because of the elections. But Cllr Jeremy Paige is lined up to be mayor.

“I suggest a picnic in the park, a stage, children’s entertainers. I’ve put in for the Platinum Jubilee grant. We’ve put in for £5,400, which includes a marquee. If not we can use the big hall.

“This is for the town and the people who put us in these seats, so it doesn’t matter what you think of the Royal Family. We want to involve local groups, in the morning we would have all the people that makes crafts, and all the charity stalls, and then in the afternoon we would have the picnic in the park with entertainment.”

Cllr Michael Williams said: “I formally move that we move along the lines you already described, and congratulate you on the work you’ve already done.”

Councillors agreed to put together a panel, with local groups and residents, to discuss the event and put forward ideas.
