An Aberystwyth Town Council donation of £8,000 to Aberystwyth Cycling Festival is a “massive boost”.

But there’s still a need for more funding, one of the organisers of the popular event has said.

The town council agreed to pay £8,000 to support the 10th anniversary event in 2020.

Organiser Shelley Childs said the funding would go a long way to ensuring the event was “balancing the books”.

Shelley gave a presentation to a recent meeting of Aberystwyth Town Council about the four-day cycling event.

He said: “We successfully submitted our proposal to Aberystwyth Town Council to provide support for our 2020 Seafront Races, the 10th consecutive running of the event.

“Aberystwyth Town Council see the races are a major sporting event for the town and have contributed every year.

“We are very thankful to them.

“Without this contribution, the races would not take place.”

Shelley said that there was also vital sponsorship from SP Energy Networks.

He added that there was still hope that they could make this year’s event the biggest ever, but that would require further sponsorship.

He said: “With the additional support of our sponsors SP Energy Networks, we are able to keep entry fees at a fair level for the competitors, and are well on the way to balancing the books.

“But we’re not quite there yet to put on a bigger and better showcase than previously, and so are welcoming any potential sponsors to come on board.”
