FORMER teammates of the late Aberystwyth rugby legend Eifion Gwynne helped raise around £9,000 for his memorial fund in one night.
Carmarthen Warriors, considered one of the best rugby sevens teams in the UK and for whom Eifion was a key player, announced the Cronfa Goffa Eifion Gwynne Memorial Fund as their chosen charity for the year at the team’s annual dinner and presentation.
The death of Eifion, known as Gwynni to his friends, a 41-year-old father-of-three who died after being hit by a car in Spain following the funeral of family friend in October, left Aberystwyth in a state of shock.
A group of current Aberystwyth RFC players, including Eifion’s brother Dewi, also joined Eifion’s Warriors teammates at the dinner, where last year’s chosen charity, Parkinson’s UK, was presented with a cheque for £5,700.
Warriors founder Arwel Davies announced the Warriors 2017 charity at the dinner, which was held at Parc Strade, Llanelli, on Saturday, 11 March, with all profits from the dinner, winnings and collections throughout the season being donated to the Trust.
