ABERYSTWYTH Town Council is trying to decide what to do with a £6,000 ridiculed ‘tourist attraction’ on North Road.

Councillors have complained that the rope labyrinth, opened in 2013, is not being used enough, and members may try to pull the plug on the project if its usage doesn’t increase.

The Cambrian News revealed earlier this year that, aside from the initial cost of building the labyrinth – made up of 720 wooden posts linked by a mile of rope – council taxpayers paid over £2,000 on its upkeep last year.

The cost of the maligned project, described as a “horrendous” and “weird” “eyesore” by nearby residents, rose after it was revealed in the Cambrian News that some payments were made on then-councillor Aled Davies’ credit card and reimbursed by the council – losing out on vital cash from claiming back the VAT.

The payments were the subject of an audit investigation.

Shortly after the labyrinth opened, it was decided that the area would be locked at night after it emerged naked revellers had been running around, swearing and causing disruption to residents.

Last year, the town council banned dogs from the area after reports of dogs “jumping on children” and problems with dog fouling.

Now councillors have renewed discussions about supplementing the labyrinth, or replacing it, to ensure the space is used more.

Money has already been set aside for a set of gates and a new slide, while councillors have continued calls to turn the area into a children’s playground.
