Youngsters from Machynlleth held a climate strike on Friday, the second in the town since the worldwide phenomenon began.

Organised by the recently formed Extinction Rebellion Youth Machynlleth group, the Youth Strike 4 Climate event saw school pupils from Ysgol Bro Hyddgen march from the school, around the Plas grounds, down Maengwyn Street before stopping at the town’s clock tower.

The event was held before pupils broke up for the summer holidays.

Throughout the UK and the world, a series of Friday afternoon “strikes” by school pupils have been held in a bid to combat climate change.

Extinction Rebellion Youth Machynlleth group held its first meeting earlier this month.

Pupils on the march were joined by activists, with guest speakers at the clock tower including Centre for Alternative Technology employee Laurence Tidy of the Zero Carbon Britain Project and Machynlleth town councillor Ann MacGarry.

The first Machynlleth school pupil strike took place in March, with dozens marching, while youngsters from the town have travelled to join in regular larger scale protests held in Aberystwyth.
