Fred’s walk
SINCE the launch of St. Joseph’s Annual Sponsored Walk on Easter Sunday, donations are already fast approaching £2,000 in aid of the church funds.Nigerian born Fr Agbor Fredrick Isek, MSP, who came to Wales from Grenada in September, has fallen in love so much with the Llyn Peninsula that he’s undertaken to lead a 20 mile Sponsored Walk fol-lowing the scenic coastal path from Abersoch to Aberdaron.“In Wales you don’t find beauty”, said Fr Fred, “but beauty finds you, and so as well as raising much needed funds, the day promises to be a wonderful occasion for all involved.”The project was launched with great success on Easter Sunday and the walk will take place on Saturday, 27 August, being modelled on the huge success of the Parish Sponsored Bike Ride last year, which in addition to boosting the Parish funds also raised £3,500 for the Wales Air Ambulance service. The event is designed to bring together Parishioners, visitors and the entire community to enjoy the breathtaking views along the 20-mile stretch of coast between Abersoch and Aberdaron.‘This is quite an historic time for our Parish’, said Gillian Williams from Pwllheli, who is co-coordinator of the Parish fundraising group, ‘as we look forward to amalgamating with the Parish of the Holy Redeemer, Porthmadog. This follows quite radical and exciting changes announced by our Bishop on the Sunday after Easter, outlining his plans to reorganize the entire Diocese in favour of fewer, yet stronger Eucharistic communities by virtue of their increased size. This will be a challenging time both for us and for our friends in Porthmadog as we merge into one huge Parish under the Pastoral care of Fr. Fredrick, whom we’ve already taken to our hearts.“We have set ourselves the challenging target of £10,000, but apart from raising much needed funds, the project is even more impor-tantly designed to bring people together and the initial response to the appeal has been truly hum-bling. “We are immensely grateful to all who have sponsored us so far, and we hope that many of our visitors and friends will consider taking part in the walk, if only for just part of the way.“The day will start with Morning Prayer at Sant Garmon’s church, Abersoch, and we are extremely grateful to the Reverend Andrew Jones, Archdeacon of Meirionnydd, who has again given us permission to conclude the day with Mass at Sant Hywyn’s church in Aberdaron. The Mass that concluded the Sponsored Bike Ride there last year was a most memorable occasion, being the first Catholic Mass to be held in this historic church since the Protestant Reformation in 1537.”To take part in the walk or for further details and sponsor forms, please contact Gillian Williams (07870 214001), Anna Meyerratken (07788 518505) or Fr.
