ATROCIOUS weather made this year’s Race the Train one of the most challenging in its 33-year history. Hundreds of runners turned up to brave the elements with more than 1,000 participants taking on the mammoth task of running 14 miles cross-country against a Talyllyn steam engine.George Watson, event organiser, was impressed with the hardiness of the race’s competitors. “Despite the weather conditions over 1,700 runners entered the 2016 Race the Train, with over 1,200 entering the Rotary Challenge,” he said. “Runners found conditions tough, with the Rotary ‘Challenge’ living up to its name.”

He added: “The stars of the day were the marshals and volunteers and their efforts are very much appreciated by the runners. The Rotary club of Tywyn would like to thank all marshals and volunteers who helped out at the event – without their support we couldn’t stage the event. We are still looking for more volunteers to assist with the organisation of next year’s event planned for 19 August. Anyone interested can contact me on 07748 494552”
