A Porthmadog-based railway has opened two new stations in time for the coming season.

Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway, which carries passengers from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, through the heart of Snowdonia National Park, has spent £3m on a new station in Caernarfon and has reconstructed a station in Waunfawr.

Since the Welsh Highland opened in Caernarfon in 1997, the station has been a temporary structure.

The new £3m station – part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government – forms a key part of the £16m Waterfront Development Project led by Gwynedd County Council to give a major boost to this historic area.

Cllr Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council Cabinet member for economic development said: “The project has been a fine example of cooperation and partnership working between multiple parties.

“Visitors arriving on a train are now greeted with a station that is deserving of its location right beside a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“Through a number of regeneration projects, we’re certain that this historical area of Caernarfon can look forward to a bright future.

“The railway is steeped in a rich history and we’re committed to securing a thriving and sustainable future for the area.

“It is very pleasing to learn how successful the initial period has been, with local people and visitors enjoying these exceptional new facilities.

“Through working with our partners, we’re trying to maximise the town’s heritage and cultural assets to ensure that Caernarfon is a vibrant destination for local people and visitors alike.”
