A CONCERT replicating one that took place 100 years ago has been held to honour refugees.
In February 1916, a concert in honour of Belgian refugees took place at Capel-y-Garn in Bow Street.
Last month, in celebration of those refugees, and in recognition of Syrian refugees who arrived recently, an anniversary concert took place there, largely replicating the 1916 event.
Dr Rhian Davies opened the evening with an account of the Davies sisters of Llandinam, who brought a number of refugees to Ceredigion.
Local and invited artistes then gave a range of musical and spoken items taken from the programme of the 1916 concert.
Siôn Meredith’s address considered the cause and effect of the current refugee crisis and he welcomed a number of Aberystwyth’s Syrian refugees who attended the concert.
Penri James helped to place the event in its historical and contemporary context, and Rhodri Morgan’s vote of thanks was surely as eloquent and thoughtful as that delivered by his grandfather Dewi Morgan at the 1916 concert.
£1,000 was collected for the Red Cross refugee fund.
