A FULLY refurbished community centre in Llangurig will be officially opened next month.

The Llangurig Community Centre has undergone a complete transformation thanks to £250,000 in National Lottery cash.

The centre, based in the village church hall, received the People and Places Funding from Big Lottery in December 2015, and work began on the project last year.

The project aimed to refurbish the village church hall to provide the parish of Llangurig with a multi-purpose community centre that will provide “an array of community activities for everyone”.

Llangurig residents have been without a meeting and activity venue since the closure of the school back in 2008.

Over the years, the church hall had fallen into a state of disrepair, and needed “considerable building works”, as well as working toilet facilities installed.

Christine Smith, a community centre committee member, said the new hall will “rejuvenate the life of the village”.

“It will become the hub of village life enabling the residents to participate in a wide range of social and educational activities,” she said.

The new multi-purpose venue also incorporates disabled access.

Rona Aldrich, Wales Committee member for the Big Lottery Fund, said: “Programmes like People and Places are making a difference to the lives of so many people in communities across Wales.

“It delivers on our promise to use National Lottery funding to regenerate and revitalise communities, tackle disadvantage head on and leave a lasting legacy.”

The People and Places programme awards grants of between £5,001 and £1 million for a broad range of community projects. For further information about the programme and how you can apply for funding, visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/wales.

An official opening day for the refurbished centre will be held on Saturday, 7 October.
