A DYFFRYN Ardudwy councillor has spoken of his delight that a decision has been made to defer road resurfacing work in the village until next year.
Work had been due to be carried out on the A496 to the North of the village in the first two weeks of August which is, according to Cllr Eryl Jones-Williams, one of the busiest times of the year for the area. It will now be carried out in June/ July 2022.
Cllr Jones-Williams said there were “a few days of exchanging emails and telephone calls, telling the highway officials that locals were up in arms over the resurfacing work being done during August”.
“As there were no pavements on the 800 meter stretch of road, pedestrians would not be allowed to walk when the tar and chipping were put down,” he added.
“There are also several junctions on the stretch of road and this would cause traffic delays when this area is very busy with holiday parks being 98 per cent full and the first two weeks in August the busiest time for this area.
He continued: “The Gwynedd officials I spoke to said that the outside contractors could only do the work in August as they had other contracts.
“It appears that they have equipment that can seal the chipping without them flying about everywhere and other local authorities wanted them to do schemes for them.
“This made me angry because outside contractors were dictating to local authorities, who originally wanted the work to be done in June or July.
“The decision to defer the work for 12 months was helped after many locals complained to our local MP Liz Saville-Roberts stating that there were no pot-holes and the road seemed to be in good condition.
“I don’t want to be critical of council officials as I know they tried everything to get the work done before August.
“What is good about this is that locals, backed by myself, community councillors and the MP, managed to persuade the highways department that it would be in the public interest to cancel the work during August.
“When a new contract is agreed in 2022 there must be a stipulation that the work cannot be done in the busy six weeks of school holidays.”
