ONE of Tywyn’s most prominent landmarks is due to celebrate its 1,500th anniversary this summer.

St Cadfan’s church has been a fulcrum of the town for centuries and has attracted worshippers and history buffs from all over the World.

Notably the religious institution is home to the famous Cadfan stone — an ornament inscribed with earliest examples of written Welsh dating from the ninth century — which attracts literary scholars from across the country.

The story of the church starts in the year 516AD, when the building’s eponymous saint, Cadfan, arrives with his missionaries to spread the word of Christ. After settling on the shore near the Dysynni Estuary, Cadfan’s first act was to set up a hut where his people could worship freely.

To celebrate the church and the formation of Tywyn, a series of events are taking place throughout the next few months.
