ABERYSTWYTH councillors have blamed the removal of the £1 trolley system outside Morrisons on the Parc-y-Llyn Retail Park for an increase in trolleys being dumped in the river Rheidol.
Campaigners have been calling for something to be done by the store about trolleys ending up in the river, with volunteers being forced to take it upon themselves to remove them.
Cllr Alun Williams, who takes part in organised litter picks in the area, said himself and a team removed four trolleys from the river in a recent sweep, while trolleys were found dumped in the river often.
Speaking to members at an Aberystwyth Town Council meeting last Monday, Cllr Williams said: “We feel the paid £1 system is going to see them come back to where they should and not in the river.”
Cllr Ceredig Davies said that the increase in trolleys being dumped has occurred since Morrisons dropped the £1 charge.
A Morrisons spokesperson said: “Our customers tell us that they find trolley locks inconvenient, especially when they don’t have a pound coin. These trolleys are valuable to us and we’d encourage the council and customers to let the store team know where they see strays, so that they can be collected.”
