Action needs to be taken to address problems with dog fouling in Machynlleth, a councillor has insisted.

Machynlleth Town Council will now urge Powys County Council to provide signs and dog waste bins, although councillors insist it is only a small minority of irresponsible dog owners who are responsible for the problems.

Cllr Glenda Jenkins said she had received a letter from local resident Sylvia Thomas who was unhappy about the “disgusting” situation, especially where dog owners had thrown bags containing dog mess into brambles and hedges, in particular around the Tanrallt area.

Cllr Jenkins said the town council had appealed to Powys council for bins and signs to be put in place previously and said they should reiterate that call.

She said: “Over two years ago, and other councillors have brought this up since as well, I asked for a bin for dog waste in Tanrallt.

“We were promised by Powys council they’d put a bin up on top of Iorwerth Terrace and it’s never happened.

“It’s not just the town council, residents are up in arms about this as well.

“If the infrastructure isn’t in place, we can’t get people to use it.”

Cllr Richie Gaskell said he had raised issues around dog fouling several times since he had joined the council and said it was up to dog owners to behave responsibly and clean up after their pets.

He said: “There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.”
