Madam,

I was interested to see your two articles about the dangers of the trunk road network in Wales and the problems of timber traffic in Llanddewi Brefi (Cambrian News, 29 August).

Both problems could be mitigated if the railway from Aberystwyth to Carmarthen was reopened. Llanddewi Brefi, for instance, is less than a mile from the former rail route. If more people had the chance to travel by rail and send freight by rail, the dangerous conditions on the trunk roads could be improved.

I agree with your commentator Patrick O’Brien that the simplest and most cost-effective way for the government to take action on climate change is to increase the number of safe cycling routes.

I love cycling in Wales but the trunk roads are no-go routes for most cyclists. In the past few days I have seen lorry drivers and cars speeding along roads which have no facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. I have also sadly seen several drivers talking on their mobile phones and, in some cases, I believe, texting while driving.

It is not surprising few people dare walk or cycle given these conditions.

Yours etc, Ray King, Christchurch Square, London.
