ABERYSTWYTH residents have been praised after “trailers full” of clothing were collected for Syrian refugees risking their lives fleeing the bloody civil war.

Since September, residents of Aberystwyth have shown solidarity with the plight of refugees as collection points for clothing donations were established across the town and surrounding area.

At a meeting of Aberystwyth Town Council, councillors heard that the clothing was now on its way to the refugees left stricken in camps in Calais, Italy, Greece, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.

Cllr Alun Williams said: “The residents of Aberystwyth and Ceredigion have come together very well to donate clothing and other items for the refugees.

“There have been trailers full of clothing donations and volunteers from across the town have been helping sort it all out.

“It has taken a while to move donations on to the intended destination because of a bottleneck in the operation.

“But 10 days ago, thanks to Aberystwyth Removals, who donated a large removals lorry and labour for the day, the clothing departed for a storehouse in Flintshire.

“From there, the donations are due to go to Syria, Greece and other camps.

“This has been the successful culmination of all the hard work and generosity.”
