A PUB landlady has had to cancel Christmas – and a popular New Year’s Eve party – after flash floods left the building under water.

Party-goers were forced to flee from a disco at the Union Inn in Tremadog pub in the early hours of Sunday morning after water came rushing into the venue.

Pub owner Peta Panter said she panicked when she saw the water surging into her beloved pub and immediately evacuated her customers.

“All of a sudden we were ankle deep in water. We waited for the fire service to arrive to assess what had happened and they were here until 4am pumping out all the water.”

Peta said she was devastated by the floods and has had to cancel all her Christmas bookings and New Year’s Eve party.

The landlady, who has ran the Union Inn for almost nine years, said she was heartbroken by the damage the floods had caused her business.

She said: “I have been looking forward to Christmas Day for so long; it’s a really special day for me and the community.

“Christmas morning is always so lovely, we have our regulars that come over and we always have such a lovely time and I’m heartbroken to think this won’t happen this year.

“I’ve had to cancel all my bookings and we always have a big party on New Year’s Eve which is not going to happen now.

“I just don’t know what I’m going to do, it’s heartbreaking, I love this pub so much and it now needs a complete refurbishment as the carpets are ruined and we don’t even know yet what damage has been done to the electrical equipment.

“It’s a huge financial blow for myself and also my staff. They rely on these busy times over Christmas as much as I do, so we’re all devastated.”

Many were enjoying a disco inside The Union Inn around 12.30am on Sunday when the pub became flooded with water.

Peta added: “It all happened so quickly, I went to check outside in the back to see if the yard was okay as it was raining so heavily and I just saw water rushing through the door.

“Everyone was enjoying themselves and we had a disco on. I just panicked as I thought with all the electrical equipment we had in the pub it was just too dangerous to keep people inside.

The day following the floods, the community of Tremadog came together to offer their support to those who had suffered damage and organised a clean-up operation.

“We have received support from our lovely locals and other businesses in the square; in particular I’d like to thank Lorraine and Dave from The Sgwar” added Peta.

“Unfortunately I think we are going to be closed for a number of weeks, it really couldn’t have come at a worst time.”
