An appeal has been made to trace a pendant linked with one of Wales’ greatest missionaries, which is thought to have been lost in a Lampeter car park.

A visitor from Essex, whose partner is the great-grandson of Dr Timothy Richard, believes she lost the pendant in the Rookery car park on the morning of 17 April.

Sheila Matheson, of Woodford Green, had been waiting for a coach to convey a party to the unveiling of a memorial to Dr Richard at his birthplace at Ffaldybrenin to mark the 100th anniversary of his death.

She says she is willing to offer a “substantial reward” for the pendant’s return.

“I was wearing a jade pendant which he gave to one of his daughters," Ms Matheson, whose partner, Bjorn Napier-Hansen, is the missionary’s great-grandson, told the Cambrian News.

“It was on a chain which was only recently repaired and the pendant must have dropped off in the car park, I believe.

“I reported this loss to the police in Aberystwyth and also in Lampeter but have not heard anything.

“I am prepared to offer a substantial reward for the safe return of this distinctive pendant which is of enormous sentimental value to me as it was given to me by Timothy Richard’s grand-daughter.”
