Madam,

I was very interested and delighted to read your recent article on major events in Meirionnydd.

I am sure some people would be interested to know more of the history of the Meirionnydd branch of Riding for the Disabled.

In the first instance the group was started by Ann Pattinson and her late husband Bill at Tyn Sarn, Dolgellau. It then came under the auspices of the Meirionnydd branch of the British Red Cross.

The group was well-supported by local volunteers of all ages, plus fundraisers. Open days were held at Tyn Sarn.

Once Princess Anne arrived by helicopter and presented the riders with rosette awards, much to their delight. The princess also enjoyed Welsh cakes. Events were held on the Marian, Dolgellau. There were visits to other areas within Wales, England and Ireland. A special vaulting group was formed and, in 1985, a vaulting display was given by the group in London at the Olympia International Show Jumping Championships, for which the group received a standing ovation – as also did Bella, a most wonderful Tyn Sarn horse.

Riding for the Disabled riders are happy and proud of all they achieve, as also are the supportive voluntary helpers, carers and friends.

A tribute to past and present. Riding for the Disabled gives and offers opportunities of a lifetime, with memories to treasure.

And congratulations to Jaspa.

Yours etc, Pat West Hubbard, Aberdyfi.
