AN ABERYSTWYTH man who has given over half a century of service to the town’s RNLI has picked up his MBE awarded by the Queen in the New Year’s Honours list.

David Jenkins, who received his award for “services to maritime safety” from Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace last Wednesday, said he was “amazed” to be honoured and said it was a “very proud day.”

Mr Jenkins, known as Dai, has dedicated over 55 years to the RNLI.

The RNLI called his contribution over the years “truly remarkable”.

Mr Jenkins has served as a volunteer at Aberystwyth Lifeboat Station for over 55 years as crew member, station administrator, and honorary secretary.

For the past 17 years he has served as station treasurer and fund-raiser.

Mr Jenkins, who had his three grandchildren Sebastian, Imogen and Collette as his three guests on the day, said the day was “absolutely fantastic”.

“It came as a bolt out of the blue that someone had put my name forward and I had got the award, he said.

“Everything I’ve done is because I’m interested in things, and not for any award.

“It was a very proud day at Buckingham Palace and something I can remember for the rest of my life.”

Mr Jenkins was also recognised for his outstanding work in the development of the popular Celtic Challenge Race, as part of the Arklow Twinning Committee, and the management and recent refurbishment of Brynamlwg – the Aberystwyth University Sports and Social Club.
