A FFOS-y-Ffin man is poised to make his marathon debut at the age of 60 in front of over 150,000 spectators this weekend.
Roger Mence, whose sister-in-law died from Motor Neurone Disease last month, is running Sunday’s Brighton Marathon in aid of the MND Association.
“I’ve jogged on and off over the years and did a couple of half-marathons a long time ago but nothing on this scale,” Mr Mence, a former Royal Mail employee, told the Cambrian News.
“I’m feeling a bit more confident now I’ve managed a couple of long runs.”
Marion Mence, 61, died on 4 March in Rhos on Sea after a two-year battle with the disease.
“She and my brother, Howard, had so much help and support from the MNDA that I thought I’d give a little bit back,” said Mr Mence.
“I’m delighted to say I’ve already raised around £1,000.
“My youngest daughter, Cerys, will be cheering me on at Brighton whilst my eldest daughter Kate, who works as a doctor in Sydney, will be following my progress over the internet.
“I’m getting quite excited as the date approaches and intend to reward myself with a pint of Guinness on reaching the finish!”
