A SPEEDY fundraiser has seen a full round of golf completed in under an hour.
Ray Cassidy and ‘caddy’ Huw Williams completed 18 holes at Pwllheli Golf course, running the length of the 4.5-mile course in a bid to raise money for a floating wheelchair for Pwllheli 13-year-old Lewis Walker who has cerebral palsy.
The event was one of a number of fund-raisers set up by Huw and Ray, who are also organising and competing in the gruelling 35-mile Pen Llyn Ultra marathon on 10 November.
The golfing event, which took place on 21 October, was a bid to get the course’s fastest known time which previously stood at a couple of hours.
Ray and Huw managed to smash that time, sneaking in at 58 minutes.
“We expected it to take a little time, while we were actually racing another group of runners who were trying to run from Nefyn Golf Club to Pwllheli’s last hole before we could get there,” explain Huw.
“We revised that a little when we were on hole 15 after 40 minutes.
“We did it in 58 minutes and 30 seconds in the end. There was high drama on hole 13 as Ray got stuck in the bunker but, other than that, it all worked out smoothly. I was running around after Ray dressed as a spaceman carrying his clubs. I could barely keep up.
“I don’t think the other runners were too happy with our time though, we’d already been in the club house for an hour and a half by the time they arrived!”
The event raised hundreds of pounds which will go towards buying a £2,000 floating wheelchair for Lewis, allowing him access to the Llyn Peninsula’s stunning beaches and waters. Huw also ran Marathon Eryri dressed as Thor to raise money for a specially-adapted buggy for children with mobility issues.
