A PORTHMADOG rowing club has raised over £3,000 for good causes.
Madog MYC’s Rowing Club’s Cob to Cardiff Challenge saw members of the club row a Celtic longboat over 230 miles from Porthmadog to Cardiff in September, coinciding with the Millennium Centre’s 10th anniversary celebrations in Cardiff.
Rather than take the boat by road, the club decided to set themselves the challenge of rowing down the west coast of Wales up to the Bristol Channel.
In addition, the club carried a slate plaque, specially made and donated by Llechwedd Slate Caverns, from Blaenau Ffestiniog, via the zip wire, mountain bike course and Ffestiniog Railway train and onward by sea.
The club also decided to use the challenge to raise money for the Wales Air Ambulance and Hospice at Home.
The challenge took over 20 rowers 10 days to complete, facing high seas and big waves on the way as well as troubles with the supporting safety boats.
They arrived in time to take part in the Ar Waith Ar Daith outdoor performance starring Shân Cothi and televised live on S4C, and to hand over the plaque to mark the culmination of the Millennium Centre’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
