An alley in Aberystwyth town centre is being left regularly strewn with rubbish with one local resident complaining that it paints a poor picture of the town.

Mark Davies said he was growing increasingly frustrated at problems with rubbish being left in the alley between Greenfield Street and Maes yr Afon, saying that the area is being blighted by rubbish from refuse bags.

Mr Davies said that part of the problem was down to when residents were putting bin bags out, but also with some refuse falling out of bags torn by gulls as refuse collectors are removing the rubbish.

He said: “It’s a regular thing. It’s a mixture of people putting bags out too early, and also when the bin men are throwing the bags in to the lorry, where the seagulls have been at the bags, rubbish gets thrown all over the alley.

“It is there for days sometimes. There are dirty sanitary pads and condoms, also food all over the alley.

“This is terrible as kids use this alley daily and it doesn’t look good on the town with tourists.”

A council spokesperson said: “As part of a new waste collection service being rolled out across Ceredigion residents are urged to present the right waste on the right day and in the right way. Doing this significantly reduces any issues arising from the way waste is presented.

“In Aberystwyth town centre the Street Cleaning and Waste Collection teams work closely together with a view of ensuring that any waste is collected and the streets returned to, at least, an acceptable standard of cleanliness as soon as possible."
