I write regarding your report ‘Unholy row over plans for former church’ (Cambrian News, 29 October). The Diocese of Menevia’s notice forbidding the use of St Winefride’s Catholic Church for religious purposes by prospective purchasers would appear to signal that the diocese wants the building to be purchased by a ‘developer’ who will take it off their hands and profitably demolish it. And the decision to remove certain religious fixtures and artefacts from the building when sold (apparently the altar, font, organ and most distressingly the beautiful stained glass window) seems designed to placate those who (like myself) object to the destruction of this church and obliteration of its history. That much seems certain, despite the diocese’s refusal to engage in any meaningful discussion on the matter. One can only hope that a suitable candidate will succeed in purchasing the building and safeguard it for the future.

The whole saga of how this fine church became a diocesan ‘hot potato’ over the years is a very sad one. Saddest of all, though, was the false premise on which it was based: that the church was unsafe when all it needed was maintenance and refurbishment.
