Further to your front page story last week, I propose renaming the Aberystwyth safe zone the Aberystwyth UN safe zone.

Looking out from my garden from 11am to 5pm, I see countless private cars driving up Eastgate, the majority of which exceed the 5mph limit with no hazard warning lights on. To compound the danger, several cars have driven down Eastgate against the one way system; again, they drive quite fast because they know they are breaking the law, not just the safe zone rules.

As a resident, I am stopped from accessing my house with my car. This is also true for several businesses in Eastgate.

An added danger is cyclists who ignore the rule to dismount and push their bicycles on foot. The most prevalent of these are the Deliveroo cyclists who often cycle down Eastgate at great speed against the one way system. One benefit of the safe zone, however, is they cycle on the road not on the pavement as before.

I have seen several near misses as pedestrians have been lulled into a false sense of security. The safe zone is not traffic free, far from it. I fear that there is bound to be an accident with grave consequences.

I must, however, mention that all delivery vans do obey the 5mph limit with their hazard warning lights on.

One other point is the closure of Market Street. With Pier Street being made one way, delivery vans in Eastgate need to do a whole circuit of the town to get to their next drop in Great Darkgate Street. This does a lot for climate change with petrol and diesel fumes polluting the air.

If this is Ceredigion CC’s bit to help against climate change, Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough will be proud of you.

The only sensible thing is to reopen Market Street to vehicles.
