A MAN who “dived” to his death off scaffolding in Aberystwyth before Christmas was “badly let down”, his family have said.

Speaking exclusively to the Cambrian News this week, Claire Randall, the sister of Steven Randall, who died on Friday, 23 December, after he was seen “diving” off the second-highest tier of scaffolding opposite the Castle Hotel, South Road, has spoken of her anger at what she sees as his “avoidable” death.

Ms Randall said she believes her brother, who first became mentally unwell in 2011, died due to a series of failings by mental health services and the police.

Mr Randall suffered with a range of mental conditions, including bipolar disorder, psychosis, depression and paranoia.

She said her concerns were not brought up at the inquest into her brother’s death, as reported in the Cambrian News this week, because she was not able to give evidence.

“Steven had a way of presenting himself to stop him getting sectioned,” said Ms Randall.

“He was in recovery for a couple of years since he first became ill in 2011 while living in Greenwich.

“Police and mental health services had always said that ‘until he does something quite serious, there is nothing we can do’.”
