ABERYSTWYTH Scouts and Cubs have been congratulated for their work in collecting recyclable items as part of a national competition.

Members of the 3rd Aberystwyth Scout and Cub troop collected more than 9,700 recyclable items between them with Lesley Griffiths, the Welsh Cabinet secretary for environment and rural affairs praising the group for their hard work.

The group took part in the ‘Ready, Set, Recycle’ challenge in the summer, alongside four other groups in Wales, which led to more than 77,000 recyclable items being collected across the UK.

They competed to see who could recycle the most plastic, paper, card, metal and glass packaging from their homes, as well as learning about the environmental impact that recycling can have.

The competition winner will be announced in October.

Alice Davis, the section leader for the 3rd Aberystwyth Scouts, said: “Taking part in the ‘Ready, Set, Recycle’ challenge was a huge deal of fun. We got both the Cubs and the Scouts involved in our group and it was a huge success.

“As the section leader for Scouts I was shocked at just how involved some of our Scouts got. We had some brilliant weekly records and I could not be more proud of how well our group did."
