Plans for major coastal defence works in Aberystwyth have gone on display at a consultation event in the town.

The Welsh Government wants to protect around 250,000 properties along the coast of Wales at risk of flooding.

The consultation document sets out proposals to manage the risks from flooding and coastal erosion over the next decade, and would see the most at-risk areas along the coast receive the bulk of the funding.

The Welsh Government has committed to investing over £350m in flood and coastal erosion risk management over the life of this government.

Storms have seen the seafront in Aberystwyth battered, with several incidents of evacuation and severe damage along the prom in the last few years.

Borth, which has also had millions of pounds spent on defences, could also benefit.

Blaming climate change, Welsh minister Lesley Griffiths said: “Everyone has a role to play and we need a long-term strategy to help us deal with the challenges that this global problem presents.

"The new strategy strengthens our stance on prevention and links with Welsh legislation and policy areas to ensure we do not store up problems for future generations.”
