MP calls on Prime Minister to bring stranded Gwynedd residents home as conflict abroad continues.

Youngsters from Gwynedd “face an arduous journey home from Mumbai”, the Dwyfor Meirionnyddd MP Liz Saville Roberts told Keir Starmer in the House of Commons, and there are reports of more constituents stuck in Doha and Dubai.

The MP said: “With commercial flights suspended, I am urging the Prime Minister to do everything within his power to bring UK nationals home safely, including the urgent deployment of emergency and chartered flights.

“I have constituents currently stranded in Doha and Dubai, as well as a group of young people from Gwynedd-based youth charity GISDA further afield in India, who face an arduous journey home from Mumbai via Johannesberg and Ethiopia. This is causing enormous uncertainty and worry.

“I am being contacted daily by constituents who are deeply worried about friends and family members caught up in this situation, unsure when they will be able to return home.

“The government must act swiftly and decisively to ensure no one is left behind during this volatile situation.

“We can be unequivocal in opposing Iran’s repressive regime while also rejecting dangerous US military action which breaks international law.

“A war launched without proper international authorisation risks devastating consequences for the region and beyond. The decision to allow UK bases to be used in this escalation raises profound legal and security concerns.

“Parliament must be consulted before the UK is drawn further in.

“UK Government must work for de-escalation and uphold international law, not deepen its involvement in conflict.”

GISDA Chief Exec Siân Elen Tomos is out in Mumbai with young people from the area. She said: “We chose to travel to India for one week to provide a cultural exchange and volunteering experience for young people, funded by the Welsh Government's Taith programme.

“It has been a fantastic, life-changing experience for five young people from various areas of Gwynedd.

“On Sunday in Jaipur, we realized that our flight home had been cancelled from Mumbai.

“After 48 hours of searching relentlessly for alternative means of returning home, we have now booked a flight to Johannesburg via Dar es Salaam, and then from Johannesburg to London via Rwanda.

“This was the only viable option, as flights have been selling out as soon as they become available.

“We have tried to contact the airline and the British consulate but have had no luck.

“We are keeping our spirits up and trying to remain calm and positive.

“I must commend the young people, who have been exceptionally understanding and positive throughout this experience.

“We hope to arrive back in Gwynedd by Saturday evening.

“We feel fortunate and are thinking about those affected directly in the Middle East.”
