With 16 months to go until the Llyn and Eifionydd National Eisteddfod, the search is on to find a designer to create a new Chair in memory of Gwynedd educator and pioneer Dafydd Orwig.
The Chair is presented in memory of Dafydd, who was prominent in the public life of Gwynedd.
Next year marks 25 years since his death and the family is keen to mark this by commissioning an Eisteddfod Chair which will reflect his life and beliefs.
Originally from Deiniolen, Dafydd Orwig (1928-1996) was brought up in Carnew, Ireland until he was 11 when the family returned to Deiniolen.
Following a period as a geography teacher in Blaenau Ffestiniog and Bethesda, he lectured at The Normal College in Bangor, teaching hundreds of students.
An educator and pioneer, he was chair of Gwynedd County Council and Chair of the Welsh Books Council, along with a number of national and other organisations.
His family hope that the Chair will be used as part of the day-to-day furniture in the winner’s home, however, it must also look striking and dignified on the Pavilion stage during Eisteddfod week in August 2021.
The successful designer will be offered timber from one of the original oak trees on the Lôn Goed, which fell in a storm about five years ago. The tree is 200 years old and is from the pathway immortalised in R Williams Parry’s iconic poem, Eifionydd.
The brief and full details for the creation of the Chair can be downloaded from the Eisteddfod website at www.eisteddfod.wales
The closing date for applications is 1 June.
The Llyn and Eifionydd National Eisteddfod will be held in Boduan, near Pwllheli, from 31 July to 7 August 2021.
