FURIOUS Tanygrisiau residents have once again protested about a convicted sex offender living just yards from a primary school.

In January, 70-year-old Philip Nigel Hewitt received a suspended prison sentence after admitting making, possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

Mr Hewitt lives yards from Ysgol Tanygrisiau and protesters claim he has been using a dating website to try and meet “single mothers” — a claim denied by him.

More than two dozen people protested outside his home this week to voice their concerns.

The protest took an ugly turn when Hewitt’s windows were smashed later that day.

Mr Hewitt has been accused of actively seeking a ‘single mother’ for a serious relationship via dating website Plenty more Fish.

In the account — which has subsequently been deleted and which Hewitt has denied creating — it was said that the convicted sex offender was looking for ‘a single mum who needs love and support’.

But Mr Hewitt says someone must have lifted a photo of himself and registered with the site pretending to be him.

“It’s not true. I’ve just had the police here in fact about that,” he said. “I am registered with the police as a sex offender. The police are looking into whoever lifted the photo of me and put text to it and they’ll be in trouble.

“I’ve never heard of this website and whoever put that on the web is going to be receiving a visit from somebody.”

In mid-January, tens of people turned up at Y Llythyrdy (the old Post Office) where Mr Hewitt resides.

On Monday, a similar number attended a new rally to express concerns about the living arrangements. Participants in the protest, organised by Welsh author Dewi Prysor on behalf of parents and children of Ysgol Tanygrisiau, were encouraged to bring ‘drums, whistles and placards’ in order to bring attention to their campaign.

Mr Prysor, who has a child at Ysgol Tanygrisiau, said he is deeply concerned.

“Someone using Mr Hewitt’s name has been using the dating website Plentymorefish.com to look for ‘single mothers for a serious relationship’,” he said. “A Tanygrisiau mother reported him to the website recently and his account has been closed today.

“There is a bus stop outside Mr Hewitt’s home where the school bus picks up children to go to Ysgol y Moelwyn. Mr Hewitt has now started using the school bus in the mornings. We don’t want him living near our children.”

Speaking to the Cambrian News, Mr Hewitt added: “I would love to move from the area, I really would.

“Unfortunately I can’t because of my parole conditions, I’m on probation, I’m simply not able to.

“This was not a peaceful protest, my windows were smashed afterwards.”

North Wales Police confirmed they had received a call from Hewitt on Monday evening reporting his smashed windows.

Chief inspector Richie Green, who was covering the protest, said: “The police have been present during the recent protests and will continue to provide a proportional response to any future peaceful protests balancing the rights of the individual and the protesters themselves.

“The individual has been the repeat victim of crime. In this regard, we cannot condone vigilante action and active investigations are ongoing.”

When asked about Hewitt’s alleged bus ride and dating site accusations, North Wales Police had no further comment to make.
