Madam,

I am writing to your paper to shame a section of the business community who consider that parking business vehicles on the pavement is an okay thing to do.

On Monday I had to remonstrate with two van drivers, one of whom was perfectly pleasant but insisted that his van was fine on the pavement as he had left a gap for people and their baby buggies to get past, but he hadn’t noticed the bus stop sign when I pointed this out. He also told me it was better to do this than cause an obstruction on the road! I must admit I didn’t see his logic.

However, my disabled husband had great difficulty getting off the bus at the stop opposite Heol Non in Llanon that day because the driver could not get his bus near to the pavement, something the van driver obviously hadn’t thought of! So, can I ask, just what is the purpose of a pavement?

Complaining to the police is not something I do lightly. I realize what a hard task they have with ever decreasing numbers but I have passed the details of the wrongdoers on to them in the hope that they can find time to talk to the owners of the businesses concerned and make them aware of their priorities but also their responsibilities.

Parking on any pavement is unfair to pedestrians but at a bus stop this could be downright dangerous. If my husband had fallen due to the height of the step down onto the road, who would be held to account for this, my husband for attempting to get off the bus, or the bus driver for not pulling up to the kerbside? I would put the blame squarely onto those van drivers, wouldn’t you?

Yours etc, Sue Slocombe, Llanon.
