Madam,

We are hugely lucky in Wales that the coast is never very far away.

So with that in mind my family and I often spend nights here and there in our caravan. We recently spent a night in Borth but, I have to be honest, it doesn’t quite hold the magic it once did. Borth as a small town feels somewhat neglected (with small glimmers of hope like Libanus), so when I heard about the tree project I really thought what a fantastic idea. I have seen Robert’s photo-shopped images of the tree and I only think what a coup it could be for the community.

The project puts me in mind of Anthony Gormley’s sculptures on Crosby beach, which have been wholeheartedly embraced. Not to mention a similar but smaller artwork in memory of my grandparents at the Dingle Garden by the artist Frances Carlisle (cast metal lends itself wonderfully to creating the bark and details of trees and branches). It’s a shame that there has been so much negativity directed at this particular project and also Robert himself.

I just wonder if this artwork would perhaps bring a welcome boost to the area. We don’t often have visionary people in our communities – not a bad plan to embrace them when opportunities arise.

Yours etc,

Kate Pierce, Castle Caereinion, Welshpool.
